EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTRE – INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE – PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME
The Early Childhood Centre (ECC) comes under the umbrella of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) Primary Years Programme (PYP) curriculum.

This encompasses grades Preschool, Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten for three, four and five year old students. The aim of the ECC Programme is to extend children in all areas of growth. It is to give meaningful experiences in a positive, accepting environment. In such an environment, children develop
• a positive self concept
• positive attitudes towards others
• a positive attitude to learning.

The PYP curriculum in the ECC is used in a developmentally appropriate way taking into account what young children should do and learn on the basis of what is best for their development in both the long term and short term. The latest brain research for students aged 2 to 4 years of age states the brain processes new learning for the development of language pathways and motor skill development. ‘Inquiry Play’ is the major focus of the infant brain. The five essential elements of the PYP / ECC curriculum are:
• concepts
• knowledge
• skills
• attitudes
• action

The five essential elements of the PYP / ECC curriculum are:
• hands on ‘activity based’ learning (discovery)
• a wide variety of play and creative based experiences
• interaction with other students
• choices, an ability to set own pace
• a physically challenging environment
• limited ‘rote’ learning methodologies

The role of the teacher is to facilitate the connection between the child’s prior knowledge and the knowledge to be acquired. This is best done with the support and partnership of our parents, because it is the child’s environment, the home, the school and the community that will predetermine the cognitive experience.
